There’s a special atmosphere in Nørrebro, with its eclectic mix of exotic eateries, small coffee and wine bars, vintage shops, green oases, and cozy little streets. 

Nørrebro has gone from being a working-class neighborhood to one of the trendiest and most exciting districts in Copenhagen. When you walk through the streets of Nørrebro, it feels like you’re in a whole different world.

1. Go flea hunting under Buen

Take the Copenhagen Metro to Nørrebro, and you’re just a ten-minute walk away from a cozy Sunday atmosphere with music and plenty of thrift store treasures.

Every Sunday through November, you can join the flea market fun at the popular clothing market Veras Market on Bispeengbuen. 

The market is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is brimming with secondhand clothing for both women and men, with a focus on good style. Rain or shine, it doesn’t matter—the market is covered.

2. Try some handmade caramels

In an old bicycle storage room on Jægersborggade—not far from the metro station at Nørrebros Runddel—you’ll find Copenhagen’s first handmade caramel factory, It's Caramel by Karamelleriet.

Here you can experience traditional craftsmanship up close and enjoy the sweet aroma as you pick out just the right caramels. They have everything from classic cream caramels and soft fudge coated in chocolate to unique hard caramels—just waiting to be enjoyed.

3. A badminton or basketball match 

It's always fun to play sports together, and Nørrebrohallen at Den Røde Plads is one of the city's most fun sports facilities, where you can get your heart rate up and have fun with your friends at the same time.

4. Enjoy the peace and quiet of the cemetery

If you get off at Nørrebros Runddel, you’ll step almost directly into one of Nørrebro’s most interesting and lush green spaces: Assistens Cemetery.

Here, it feels as if time has stood still, and you can sense the breath of history as you walk past the graves where H.C. Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard, and Michael Strunge are buried. Sit down on a bench and enjoy the fact that all you have to do is simply be right here.

5. Sailing in the Shape of a Swan on the Lakes

A 10-minute walk from Nørreport, the iconic swan pedal boats await you at the Lakes, inviting you to enjoy a beautiful boat ride. You can rent the swans at the boat rental stand by Kaffesalonen. It’s not possible to make a reservation, so just show up.

Otherwise, the Lakes are also a lovely place for a leisurely stroll with views of the treetops and the city’s rooftops. A walk around all three lakes covers a distance of 6.35 kilometers.

6. Enjoy a Korean-inspired breakfast

Get off the Metro at Skjolds Plads and pop into Et Cetera. Forget all about croissants and cardamom buns—this small Korean-inspired eatery has one of the city’s most interesting and unique breakfast menus.

Try, for example, their pancake with spring onions, Vesterhavs cheese, and chili oil, or their Strawberry Daifuku—a matcha mochi filled with red bean paste and fresh strawberries.

7. Enjoy ice cream and other treats at Skjolds Plads

In recent years, one little gem after another has popped up at Skjolds Plads in the Haraldsgade neighborhood of Ydre Nørrebro, where you can take the Copenhagen Metro directly to a spot in the sun.

Treat yourself to crispy sourdough rolls from Bageriet B, authentic Sicilian ice cream, a budget-friendly 5-course meal at Oberra—or just hang out in the square, where there’s plenty of activity, a great atmosphere, and, not least, the evening sun.

8. Recharge your energy with a sauna infusion

Treat your body and soul to a warm hug. Take the Metro to Nørrebro and visit Heat Harmony, which offers sauna sessions as the perfect way to unwind.

Browse the stalls for unique secondhand clothing, plants, and jewelry, and enjoy the fact that the flea market also features small food stalls offering organic vegetables, sourdough bread, and plant-based breakfast and lunch options. Yum!

10. Lose yourself in the clay between your hands

At Pilos CPH in Nørrebro—near Nuuks Plads—you can get a little taste of ceramics with a one-day workshop or experiment with wheel-throwing techniques, glazes, and colors in a 5-week course. The talented ceramicist Elena Rigas will guide you every step of the way.

Something special happens when you sit down at a potter’s wheel with a lump of clay in your hands. You can let your imagination run wild and automatically forget everything else for a while.

11. Experience the Blågaard Festival

Take the Copenhagen Metro to Forum and join the festivities at Blågaards Festival, which offers free music and cultural experiences every year.

The purpose of the festival is to celebrate and strengthen the diversity and sense of community found at Blågaards Plads.

12. A Taste of the Whole World 

Take the Copenhagen Metro to Nørrebro, where, on the small square between the station and Nørrebro Bycenter, you’ll find a wonderful street food spot where you can indulge in everything from Turkish kebabs to Iranian stews and delicious burgers.

Nørrebro Street Food also features indoor food stalls if the weather isn’t suitable for eating outdoors.

13. Try the chicken burger featured in The Bear

Take the Copenhagen Metro to Nørrebros Runddel and sink your teeth into one of the delicious sandwiches from Poulette, which appears in an episode of the critically acclaimed American hit series The Bear.

Poulette has a simple but brilliant concept: They serve juicy burgers with fried chicken or mapo tofu and fries. Nothing else.

14. Go for a run with others at GRØD

Looking for a running partner? Lace up your running shoes, hop on the Copenhagen Metro to Nørrebros Runddel, and join GRØD Social Runners for a fun run—followed by a free serving of oatmeal with apples, caramel sauce, and almonds.

The porridge runs take place on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of every month at 9 a.m. from the porridge bar on Birkegade, where participants run a 5–6-kilometer route around the lakes. There’s always a lead group and a tail group, so runners of all levels can join in.

15. See the beautiful gable painting

If you take the Copenhagen Metro to Nørrebro, it’s just a short walk before you can experience art in the cityscape.

At the intersection of Hillerødgade and Nørrebrogade, this dynamic work of art brightens up the otherwise chalk-white building facade. The piece was created by artist Simon Sebastian and donated to the city by the engineering firm Bang & Beenfeldt in connection with their 50th anniversary.
