Just over 400 years ago, Christian IV built a new neighbourhood. The district was to be called Christianshavn, located between the city centre and Amager and surrounded by water. This is still the case today, with the district's canals providing the setting for houseboats, tourist boats and cosy cafés.
Christianshavn is also home to one of Copenhagen's biggest tourist attractions, Fristaden Christiania, whose quirky and creative spirit is expressed in the area's self-built houses and small art workshops.
Close to Christianshavn Station are also two of Copenhagen's historic churches, Christianskirken and Vor Frelsers Kirke, and if you want to see Christianshavn from above, you can visit Vor Frelser Kirke's golden church tower, whose last 150 steps run on the outside of the tower itself.
