Guide: Let the Metro take you to the city's green breathing spaces
Hop off the Metro at Havneholmen and take a trip to BaneGaarden - a little hidden gem tucked between the tracks and a tunnel from the old DBS railway terrain.
Today, the large old wooden barns have been transformed into a sourdough bakery and street food stalls surrounded by more than 1.5 hectares of wild nature with chickens, bees and blackberry bushes. A wonderful place under the treetops, far from the hustle and bustle of the big city, but still in the centre of town.

If you get off at Nørreport, it's not many metres to the King's Garden, the oldest of its kind in the kingdom with Rosenborg Castle as the sparkling crown jewel. The garden was built by Christian IV in the early 1600s and is today a popular public retreat.
Here you can stroll along the beautiful avenues, sniff the flowers in the Rose Garden or throw yourself on a blanket in the grass. The park also offers a playground and several places to eat if you get hungry.

If you need to see something beautiful, just take the Metro to Østerport. From here it's just a short walk to Kastellet, one of Europe's best preserved fortifications with five bastions.
The area still functions as a military barracks, but the curious are still welcome. And there's plenty to explore at Kastellet: in addition to the beautiful green surroundings, there are cannons, a prison and an old mill.

If you get off at Nørrebros Runddel, you step almost directly into one of Nørrebro's most interesting and lush green areas: Assistens Cemetery.
In here, it's as if time stands still, and you feel the wings of history as you walk past the graves where H.C. Andersen, Søren Kirkegaard and Michael Strunge are buried. Sit on a bench and enjoy the fact that all you have to do is be right here.

At the Lakes, the iconic swan pedal boats await, inviting you to take a beautiful boat trip. There are swans for two or four people, so the whole family can join in. The swans can be rented from the boat hire at Kaffesalonen, which is a ten-minute walk from Nørreport. It's not possible to book an appointment, so you just have to turn up.
Otherwise, the lakes are also a great place for a stroll with views of the treetops and city rooftops. A walk around all three lakes stretches to 6.35 kilometres.

Between the lines: Every day, thousands of people travel on the Metro, and behind every face there is a story. In Frederiksberg, we met Karina and 15-year-old Sigrid, who has fought hard to get where she is today.

Drip, drip, drip. We can't escape a little rain every now and then, but luckily the city is full of cozy experiences with a roof over your head - and the Metro will get you there dry.
