About Orientkaj
Line: M4
Type: Above ground

If you take the Metro to Orientkaj, you will arrive right in the middle of Nordhavn's old port industry, which has undergone rapid development in recent years and has become one of Copenhagen's new exciting districts.

The elevated station is inspired by Nordhavn's historic port industry, and although it is both eye-catching and bombastic, it blends perfectly into the raw port surroundings.

Here are five fun facts about the Orientkaj Metro station.

1. Aesthetic architecture

Orientkaj is one of a total of 13 elevated train stations in Copenhagen and, with its striking appearance, is a prominent feature of the Nordhavn skyline.

The station is located 2.9 meters above sea level and is shaped like a large shipping container held up by massive concrete cranes, fitting perfectly into the industrial harbor look that characterizes Nordhavn.

The interior design features white mosaics, while the exterior surfaces are clad in aluminum that reflects daylight and gives the station a light appearance.

2. The only metro station with a sea view

Orientkaj is located right next to the harbor in Nordhavn, so you can enjoy the beautiful sea view both when you are on the train and when you hop off at the platform. Enjoy the fresh sea air in your hair, while you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Trekroner Fort and Sweden on the horizon.

Right next to the metro station, you can also hop on one of the yellow harbor buses and enjoy the view from the water.

3. Award-winning play of light colors

When the streetlights come on in the evening, the square beneath the metro station is transformed into a colorful display of blue, orange, yellow, and white lights. The beautiful patterns are inspired by Nordhavn's unique port and industrial history and create both atmosphere and security at Orientkaj Plads.

The light installation was designed by Light Bureau in collaboration with By & Havn and Københavns Kommune and is a creative solution based on four ordinary street lamps.

The successful design won platinum at the Build Back Better Awards and was nominated for the Danish Lighting Award.

5. Two new metro stations on the way

Since 2020, Orientkaj has helped connect the new district of Nordhavn with the rest of Copenhagen. For example, you can get from Orientkaj to Østerport in 4 minutes and to Copenhagen Central Station in 11 minutes. Along the way, the M4 line shares stations and tracks with the M3 Cityringen, so you can easily switch to other metro lines.

And it doesn't stop there.  Soon, the M4 will be extended with two new stations in Ydre Nordhavn: Levantkaj and Nordsø Plads. The first passengers are expected to be able to get off at the new stations in 2030.
