Pernille With Madsen has decorated the metro station at Enghave Brygge with glittering light works, abstract reliefs and glowing onyx that you might not notice at first glance.

The Danish Arts Foundation has selected the five artists who have created the art for the five metro stations. The artworks were created for each station, but have a common theme that reflects on time and space, geology and water. The project has received financial support from the Obel Family Foundation, the Villum Foundation and the Danish Arts Foundation.

Glowing onyx and abstract ceramics

But it's not just the concrete that Pernille With Madsen has energised. Other light works consist of warm onyx stones, behind which she has added light and printed a silkscreen on top. In this way, the works consist of three layers that merge together to create an eye-catching effect.

On the way down the escalators, if you let your eyes wander to the sides, another art element awaits. Here, some of the usual wall panels are replaced with ceramics with abstract patterns.

‘I hope that art can provide a different aesthetic experience that has a different scale. I think it makes you want to touch it to find out what it is,’ says Pernille With Madsen.

Did you know that?

Pernille With Madsen has collaborated with the Danish Technological Institute to create the artworks, using robotics for the precise placement of the fibre optics. Some of the artworks consist of up to 6,000 individual light guides in finely meshed structures.

At Enghave Brygge, artist Pernille With Madsen has replaced a large number of the traditional panels at the station with various art elements, which now stand out in several places.

‘Immediately, the art blends in with the existing architecture. You might not stop and think until the tenth time: What is the message in that?’ Pernille With Madsen explains.

The elements she has chosen to include are a mix of archaeological finds, geological phenomena and science fiction props. In the middle level of the station, where you buy tickets, 13 of the normal glass panels have been replaced with concrete elements with embedded glowing LEDs.

‘They're going to play with the illusion of what might be behind the wall in this space, which is actually a very large hole in the ground,’ she says.

Each of the concrete elements is 1 x 2 metres in size.

About the work at Enghave Brygge

Light works, abstract reliefs and concrete decorations

The five new metro stations in Sydhavn will all be decorated with art. At Enghave Brygge, artist Pernille With Madsen has created various elements that will stand out in several places at the station. There will be light works, abstract reliefs and concrete decorations that combine high technology, archaeology and geology. The work plays with the past and future and will be like a mix of an archaeological find and a science fiction prop.
